San Fransisco - Day 3

On Sunday morning we woke up ready to go! We did so much this day: rode a bus, went to Ghirardelli Square, Fishermans Wharf, Alcatraz, rode a cable car, shopped more in Union Square, and ended the night watching the Rangers play on TV at Bob's.

We bought the all day bus pass that was good for all the buses and cable cars! What a deal. For $12 bucks we could go anywhere. It was a little confusing at first but once we missed our first bus we were good to go on the second one. The trick is hopping on and off REALLY fast, as they only stop for about .5 seconds.

We made it to Ghirardelli Square. It was basically just a little village on the water with boutiques and cafes.
Our first stop was for breakfast at The Buena Vista cafe. It's a little hole in the wall place that is famous for introducing Irish Coffee to the world. Jordan gave it 2 thumbs up!
Then we walked along the beach for a while and felt the water. It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be. There were TONS of people swimming in the waves. And of course we had to write our names in the sand.

Since I am not a coffee drinker I stopped to get a Sea Salt Carmel Hot Chocolate. I could only drink about half because it was just sooo rich, but it was sure delicious!
Next we stood in line to ride the cable car from one turnaround to the other. The first was located here in the village and the other in Union Square. We learned a very important lesson on this ride. Don't try to get back on at the other end. The line was INSANE. We waited for like 45 minutes and then realized that we could have just hopped on with no wait if we had walked 3 blocks down the road. Oh well, lesson learned!
We got off the cable car at Fisherman's Wharf and went to find some lunch.
We ended up at the Sourdough bread factory. All the smells were amazing!!

Then we walked all along the piers and watched some amazing street performers. There were acrobats, musicians, and just about anything you could imagine. It was a neat little area though.
Then we took our place in line for the ferry to Alcatraz. When we got to the island we took the audio tour. I would highly recommend this. It was narrated by ex inmates and guards that were there. I loved it and want to research and read all about Alcatraz now. I am particularly intrigued by the fact that there are still 3 men missing that escaped. I so wish Daddy was here to ask him about it. I know he would have an opinion on if the sharks got them or if they are living in South America now. :)

They could see and hear San Fransisco from certain cells. This must have been torture just staring out at the freedom.

This is what is left of the Warden's house. They along with their whole families lived on the island with the inmates. It was very interesting to hear the children who grew up on the island talk about how they played with the inmates. I am not too sure about that....

In this picture you can actually see the hole they supposedly dug out with spoons. Crazy to think about.
Then we walked all the way back from Pier 33 to our hotel. This was a LONG way! But fun to see pretty flowers and houses.
And we ended the night with this AMAZING peanut brownie ice cream dessert. We couldn't finish it but it was beyond description!! And to make it even better the Ranger game was just finishing up on TV. We were exhausted and crashed in bed after our long day!
